Rainwater Harvesting Project | Backfilling Construction Guidelines
Backfilling is a critical step in the construction of an underground rainwater harvesting system. Proper backfilling helps protect the PP storage modules and waterproofing system, while ensuring long-term stability, ground load-bearing capacity, and reliable rainwater storage performance.
Before Backfilling
Complete module installation, geotextile and waterproof geomembrane installation, and a 24-hour water-retention test. Make sure the tank is watertight and structurally stable before proceeding.
Select Proper Backfill Materials
Do not use frozen soil, sludge, construction waste, or soil containing sharp objects. A minimum 100 mm layer of clean medium sand should be placed above the waterproofing layer for protection.
Layer-by-Layer Compaction
Backfill evenly and symmetrically, with each layer no more than 200 mm thick. Within 500 mm above the storage modules, use manual spreading and lightweight compaction. Heavy machinery should not operate directly over the modules.
Control Cover Soil Thickness
The required soil thickness depends on the application:
Lawn areas: ≥ 0.4 m
Shrub areas: ≥ 0.9 m
Tree planting areas: ≥ 1.5 m
Regular vehicle roads: 1.5–2.0 m
Fire truck access areas: ≥ 2.0 m
Final Inspection
After backfilling, ensure the surface is level, the compaction meets requirements, and the cover thickness complies with the design specifications before proceeding with landscaping or pavement restoration.
